Re: OK then, what WAS the worst move ever by a baseball manager?
From Iggy in the Pirates can't do anything right:
"Today, the Pirates are up 2-1 after a 2 out infield hit in the top of the 6th inning. This single left the bases loaded. Next up, Oliver Perez, who let up a HR in the first inning but has since struck out 7 and let up 2 hits. So they let Perez bat and he strikes out, ending the Pirates half of the inning. Bottom of the 6th now, Perez strikes out the first 2 batters, but the second batter reached first base on a wild pitch. Our super manager then yanks Perez. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE FREAKING KIDDING ME! You let him bat with bases loaded & 2 outs, then yank him 2 batters later? " I thought that was a pretty dumb move, but doesn't have postseason in it to magnify it. |

Re: OK then, what WAS the worst move ever by a baseball manager?
I agree with not subbing for Buckner in that game, they regularly used Singleton as a defensive sub all season. My guess there was some stupid logic along the lines of, he's a veteran that got us this far, he deserves to be on the field when we win. In other words, emotion trumping logic. Didn't work out very well.
Also, pitching Bob Stanley and Calvin Schiraldi in the tenth and leaving them in there after the Mets went single-single-single-single-single-single-single. Finally, putting Yum-Yum-Yum back out on the mound for game 5 of the 2001 WS after he had already blown a 2-run lead the very night before, and then lost the game the very next inning. After that Brosius home run he looked like a 5 YO who got sent to his room for being naughty. |

Re: OK then, what WAS the worst move ever by a baseball manager?
Red Sox related: Mike Hargrove picking Paul Assenmacher over Chris Haney or Jim Brower for the 1999 ALDS thus going with only 4 starters and no long reliever(all for the benefit of getting a terrible washed up LOOGY who ended up with a 27.00 ERA in the series).
Game 3, Dave Burba's forearm problem acts up again and Hargrove brings in his Game 4 starter in the 5th inning despite leading the series 2-0 and the game 1-0. Wright promptly blows the game, and in games 4 and 5 the Cleveland starters who were asked to start on short rest combine to give up up 15 runs in 4 IP. Baseball managers, in general, are pretty terrible about starting guys on short rest in the playoffs for questionable reasons. The classic case here is starting your game 1 starter in game 4 when you are down 2-1 in a 5 game series. |
