Default buying poker chips help

I want to buy poker chips and most sets i see on ebay that are 500 pieces offer it with 150 1 dollar grey chips, 150 red 5 dollar chips, 100 25 dollar green chips, 50 50 dollar blue chips and 50 100 dollar black chips. I can also customize it and have any denomination and quanity of 500 chips i want for extra 5 dollars. The total for this on ebay including shipping is about 60 dollars which is not much to me.

My question is should i customize it and just have 1 dollar, 5 dollar and 25 dollar chips and forget about having any 50/100 dollar chips? I also see that i can choose 10 dollar chips as well. I just play poker with about 4-5 friends and we usually play like a mini- tournament and none of them really like to play cash games. I also want to have a set for myself and i noticed that when i played 1-2 no limit at the casino, all they gave me were 1 and mostly 5 dollar chips.

Should i customize it and have more 1 and 5 dollar chips and forget about the big denomination chips or should i just buy it the way it already is. I kind of feel like i rather customize it and have only 1 dollar, 5 dollar, 10 dollar and some 25 dollar chips in case for home games i may have in the future.

And to those people who have home games that play 1/2 no limit, do you guys only carry 1 5 and 10 dollar chips? I feel like the 50 and 100 dollar chips are sort of worthless unless i play tournamnets.

1 person told me that i should not buy premarked chips and to just buy chips with no labels on it. I find those to be plain though but marked chips can be annoying. Whats my best option

thanks guys.

1, 5, and 25 are fine a 1/2 NL game. Figure out the 'bank' that you will need for your game - base the chips bought off that expectation.

10, 50 chips are kind of pointless.

100's chips are nice for tournament play. You can have a decent SnG set with just 5, 25, 100. People use the 100 for 1 chips (and the reverse). Again chips you have would depend on the structure/# of people playing.

Whether you should get denominated or not is personal preference. I like my chips with denoms. That way no one claims confusion.

I like denominations on my chips so I don't have to answer the question "what's the red chip worth?"

For 4 or 5 players playing cash games or sit and go's (tourneys), you won't need more than 3 denominations. I'd recommend 25, 100, and 500 denominations just like most casinos use for their cheap tourneys. There's no need for a 50 chip.

Like most casinos, you won't need many of the chips being used for the small blind in cash games. For example, I designed my .25/.50 cash set for 8 people and got the following denoms:

100 x .25
300 x 1.00
100 x 5.00

100 quarters is even more than enough for 10 people. 8 per person should be fine. 100 $5 chips allows for about 13 rebuys (we usually buy in for $40 max).

I prefer having separate cash and tournament sets so people don't try to slip tourney chips into your cash game after. If this isn't an issue get chips without dollar signs on them and let them represent pennies when you play cash games, and dollars when you play tourneys (or whatever).

Also, with only 4 or 5 players, 300 chips is more than enough.

Finally, you can try my poker chip calculator here: www.homepokertour.com/chip_calculator.php

and also check out chiptalk.net and homepokertourney.com

Well you need to decide how nice of a chip you want, and how much you're willing to spend. Chip prices will range from .04 to $1.50 each depending on the quality.

I paid an arm and a leg for mine cause I wanted nice ones.

I recommend you check out the chip reviews at homepokertourney.com, find some you like, and get samples before you make a decision to buy a whole set.

I am a regular at ChipTalk.net and I concur with Steve. The usual process is that guys first get some cheap plastic "Dice" chips for something like 5-20¢/chip and realize after a while that they would like something nicer. This is why he suggests getting samples 1st. There are many options for a 3 denomination set like you are suggesting. The first thing you need to do is figure out how nice a set of chips you want. This will be a balancing act between price and quality. The best two sites to discuss and learn about poker chips are the two that steve mentioned. www.homepokertourney.com and www.chiptalk.net My preference is www.chiptalk.net as I think the guys at CT are more knowledgeable but there is good info at both places and there is a fair amount of crossover from one to the other.

For samples, if you are looking for cheaper chips, say less than 50¢/chip these two places are well known: http://www.discountcasinogear.com/
http://www.5stardeal.com/
and if you are looking for something nicer, two other places have lots of samples available:
http://www.holdempokerchips.com/Default.asp
http://www.apachepokerchips.com/pokerchipsamples.html

Obviously there are many other places you can buy poker chips from, but the above mentioned ones are well known to those of us that obsess about poker chips.

Suggestion to anyone in HP reading this- unless you know your game and players very VERY well, do NOT use the same set of chips for tournaments and cash games!

If you can trust everyone, then you can gamble on chips not moving from one format to the other...
