Your car insurance usually won't cover the theft of items inside of your vehicle.

But, your Home owners or Renters Insurance will. Fingers crossed for you having a policy.

man, frauding insurance companies must be insanely easy.
I mean, I know that people do it and that probably has a big effect on the rates I have to pay.
But it's practically like they're telling you, "take pics of your gold-coins...buy insurance from us... then call us in a few months and tell us it was stolen."

I wasn't sure about that either.
I had stuff taken out of my car on a break-in a long time ago and my car-insurance rep asked it was worth more than $500 and it wasn't.
So I guess with my policy I would have gotten some of it back if it was worth $500.

Definitely worth asking about and then trying to file a claim if you have any chance.
Although in my heart of hearts I really don't think the insurance company should have to pay for the OP's stupidity.

There certainly is a chance of recovery, but I'm going to continue to laugh at it anyhow.

My SUV had gotten broken into (a few months ago) and my car insurance (Geico) did not cover the items- but my Renter's Insurance (Geico) did. Yeah, weird- but true.

Thank God for that- $2,300 in items stolen. $1,800 check cut. I had a $500 deductible.

I now have a $700 Clifford alarm system installed. I can "talk" to my SUV up to a mile away and know what's going on. I also enjoy the remote start.
