i need to watch the hustler

[/ QUOTE ]

I watched it again recently, and (has been often stated) it's just a great, great movie. Paul Newman, George C. Scott, and Jackie Gleason each gave fantastic performances. I suppose it's a bit dated, but it captures the essence of gambling better than any other movie in the genre.

I thought the ending to "Color of Money" was disappointing, if appropriate. Newman obviously reverted to his degenerate ways, and it was kind of sad...

first hand experience.....I am now 38 years old and grew up in a pool hall. In college I have matched up with Johnny Archer, Shannon "Doughboy" Daugherty and others that have money and will bet high. Keep in mind that betting high in pool is not like betting high in poker.

Being +EV in pool is almost impossible because of the degens you have to be associated with. Grinding the pokers is 1000 times better then playing on the road.

I was fortunate enough to realize this at a young age. All (and I mean ALL) of my friends that made a run at it ended up dying from drug overdoses or broke.

real life isnt like the movies unless you are a Philipino. Every Philipino I ever met was a world beater and could play 48 hours straight and never got out of stroke.

[censored] pool.

**edit: OP, you have put me on tilt making me remember how [censored] hustling pool was 20 years ago....sigh, no more poker tonight.

being a pool hustler seemed cool back when I was like 12, now I play 1 or 2 games with my freinds and I am bored out of my mind. Could be cuz I suck at the game though.

the pool hustlers you see in movies are clowns compared to the young online generation that play at online sites such as YAHOO. its not even close imo.

also, after reading the ESPN article id much rather be a pro poker player than a pro pool hustler. at least when you have to travel in poker its to a nice casino and not some poolhall in butt [censored] arkansas

also finding a good supply of fish is next to impossible for most hustlers.
If you go to the online poker room open to US players, in my area, it's mostly the same guys playing eachother, and always giving and taking chips and negotiating, so most of them break about even, except they lose to the rake. Some guys seem to consistently take the best of it, but they don't get way too much action.
