SUPER NEWB QUESTION

If I want to buy something like VWESX (vanguard fixed income) can I do that over something like etrade or do I need to open a vanguard account?

You can only purchase Vanguard index funds if you have a Vanguard account. However, the way around it is to buy the ETFs version of the Vanguard index funds.

You can buy VWESX at E*Trade, but they charge you a transaction fee.

ftse100 down 3.4% at the moment. thank [censored] i've got $80k in savings account and only investment in the markets is a $10k in a tax free emerging markets fund.

thanks also for the book recommendations, ill check them out on amazon. i generally prefer books which involve someone having a financial disaster, i prefer books where people take huge gambles and lose rather than win, any books like that out there?

For U.S. investors, realized gains on assests held for at least one year are taxed as long-term capital gains tax. This is currently capped at 15%. Gains on assets held for less than one year are taxed as ordinary income tax which may or may not be higher than 15% depending on your specific tax situation.
