Default When to break a wheel in CP2-7?

It is very tempting, when playing CP2-7, to put a wheel in the middle whenever you can do so. But this is not correct, because sometimes we need to strengthen the back or front hands instead.

Does anybody want to try to generate a rule of thumb for when to break the wheel?

Here are 100 hands I found which contain the ranks 23457 but do not have a wheel in the middle of their best setting. (Some may have 23457-flush, I didn't check closely.)

(In fact, it appears that it is usually incorrect to play the wheel! In my sample, 12.6% of hands had the ranks 23457, but only about 5% had wheels. Again, flushes may alter things a bit--- not all those possible wheels may really be present.)

It seems that a lot of the times you have to break the wheel to strengthen the back hand enough to strengthen the front hand, if that makes any sense. In other words, when breaking the wheel can allow you to make two pair, straight, or J-high flush in the back, which in turn allows AA in front, and you still have 8 or 9 high in the middle, it's a break.

Is breaking a 75 for a 76 a no brainer?

Cases like 2345578TTTKKA also require that you split the wheel in order to make a full house in back w/ pair in front. I wondered what the dividing line was--- how bad of a low was it worth keeping?

55TTT 23478 KKA is a no-brainer
55TTT 23479 KKA is also worth it, but
TTTKK 23457 5JA is better than 55TTT 2347J KKA, and
JJJKK 23457 5TA is better than 55JJJ 2347T KKA.

I thought this was one of the more interesting hands in my list:

2h4h7h9hJh 3d4s5cTdQc 5dAhAs

Here the low is quite bad but there is really no other front/back alternative which is nearly anywhere as strong.

I think switching 23457->23467 to use the five elsewhere is almost always correct, you are sacrificing only about 5% of middle strength.

I agree. I only get to play CP2-7 a couple of times a year, but I find this work very interesting.
