Why not buy in for a small blind at the big blind?

You'd want some sort of optimal stack for the other positions of course.

question though...can a player be so good and the other players so bad that he actually makes money in the blinds in no limit?

Theoretically, sure. If your opponents push-raise any flop for 100 BBL and turn their hand over, I'm pretty sure you'd beat them with the big blind each hand. No actual opponents are that bad, but theoretically someone could be.
