Hi Nina - I imagine you were either quartered or sixthed here.

If you were quartered, you lost one buck per big bet. If you were sixthed, you lost two bucks per big bet.

You figure to get fractionated (quartered, sixthed, or eighthed) with A2XY in six max approximately three times out of ten. You'll only get sixthed or eighthed in six max something like one time out of forty three.

In general, you look for ways to scoop. The way you promote a half winner for low into a scooper is by timely raising in an attempt to knock out a weak high hand (but one that is better than yours).

But you're not going to knock out another nut low hand.

By the time you realize you're getting quartered or worse, it's usually too late to fold. That is you'll lose more on the hand by folding than by calling it down.

In this case it should look to you like you're probably getting quartered or sixthed after the second betting round.

But your raise on the third betting round is fine. Looks like SB also has A2XY when he leads on the third betting round but you still might knock out Button with a better high hand than yours, thus promoting your hand from 1/2 to 3/4.

That obviously didn't work this time, but it was worth the gamble.

You can get an idea of the experience level of your opponents on the basis of how they play A2XY hands. If SB did also have A2XY, note that he/she realized you had A2XY at least by the time you raised on the third betting round (because SB backed off on the river). If Button also had A2XY, then either Button never raises with the nut low (a foolish way to play) or Button suspected early on that you and/or SB had A2XY.

Hard to fault you for betting on the fourth betting round, but I might have backed off and checked behind SB on the fourth betting round. I'd be worried that Button read it too and would raise with any decent high. And in that case you'd have been stuck losing a portion of two big bets on the river instead of one or none.

My only suggestion: A check on the river might be better.
