Noobie question - big draw on turn for a big bet
Alright, so after having much success at the omaha $300 (1,2 blinds) game at the local casino I came across this hand.
Now a few words, as I've stated earlier I am a principally holdem player (both Limit and NL) but have found nut peddaling at the omaha game simply too profitable to give up. Anyway this hand came up and I'm concerned I may be a little too nittish. Please be merciless in your criticism Stacks hero 700 villain 200 Reads Villain is a very good experienced player, and I'm begginning to suspect he likes to push people off pots when he senses weakness. I'm perceived as a bit of a nit at omaha, don't know if people pay that much attention though. I have QTd 93s in the BB utg raises to 7 and there are 5 callers to me, I also call (mistake???) Flop (42) Jd 8d 2c I think I'm pretty strong here so I bet the pot, only the villain, in CO calls turn (126) 3c (Jd 8d 2c) I check, and villain moves allin for his remaining 120 odd chips Hero does what? And should he have folded preflop and/or checked the turn. |

well I would definitely push the turn, as played I would insta call, maybe someone will argue you are not priced in against his range but usually you are. Call preflop only if they are really bad.

Re: Noobie question - big draw on turn for a big bet
Closing the action with 5 callers PF I think is probabally ok. I doubt it is hugely +EV or -EV either way depending on how you play post flop vs these opponents.
What are the stack sizes of the other players in the pot on the flop and how aggressive are they (especially UTG). If stacks aren't too deep and there are some agressive players I would probabally try for a pot-sized c/r on the flop. In your spot on the turn I would call. Could definetly just have a set with maybe a blocker or 2 and you have plenty of equity there or he could have just a higher draw or even a strong draw like yours but slightly worse. Not sure what the worst spot is (prob higher diamond draw with some straight draw and 1 pair), but even when he has top set and a higher flush draw you aren't in that bad shape since you only need about ~33%. pokenum -o qd td 9s 3s - ad jh jc 5d -- jd 8d 2c 3c Omaha Hi: 40 enumerated boards containing 3c 2c Jd 8d cards win %win lose %lose tie %tie EV 9s 3s Qd Td 12 30.00 28 70.00 0 0.00 0.300 Jc Ad 5d Jh 28 70.00 12 30.00 0 0.00 0.700 Edit: O yeah. I agree with RT just push the turn. You don't even have a strong made hand yet so it would be good if you get him to fold some crap pair + draw or something similar since he only has a pot-sized bet ;eft. Better to win it right out on the turn. |

Re: Noobie question - big draw on turn for a big bet
Once I bet the pot on the Flop I'm never folding to a PSB on the turn, so I will just go ahead and pot it when it puts Villian all in. Fold equity and all.

Re: Noobie question - big draw on turn for a big bet
If you can count on villain betting if you check (and it sounds like you can), then you must open-push the turn. You're not folding, and you'd be happy to take down the pot since your bottom pair is unlikely to be best right now.
If villain were instead a passive calling station, then checking the turn would be a good option. |

You have 23 outs, this is a easy call, I'd still push though as despite the fact you are likely a favourite you would rather him fold.

Pre-flop is call is bad play.
I do not like leading flop. You have great hand. You should go for check-raise ready to put all the money in. If you bet flop and get called there is no turning back when turn is blank. Push turn and put your opponent all-in. |

Re: Noobie question - big draw on turn for a big bet
Seems like an easy turn push. You have a hand where you definitely want fold equity. Villain could easily be "bluffing" with a hand that has a PP that currently beats you, which you don't want to do!
Given your read on Villain you should definitely push here. |

Re: Noobie question - big draw on turn for a big bet
If it's a aggro game then check raising to clear out similar draws is definitely the best play, but he did not specify. If it's a loose-passive game where lots of flops are getting checked around not leading would be criminal.
Preflop is pretty meh but it's not a huge mistake. The turn is definitely a push. You would like to fold out moderate hands that are beating you or have a good chance of beating you, like a better flush draw or any pairs. |

Re: Noobie question - big draw on turn for a big bet
OK thanks guys. In the heat of battle I actually folded. But I was pretty sure almost the second I'd done that it was a mistake. I certainly won't be doing that again. Thats what these forums are about I suppose. I guess my reasoning was that he might have had a set and a higher flush draw but now I see that even in this worst case scenario I've probably got enough equity to call.
