As any insurance. They are -EV money wise (as cost of getting a flu multiplied by probabiilty of getting it is less than cost of the shot) but +EV utility wise (if your utility function is similair to the one of most people).
This is why you pay for insuranc. It evens out variance which is worth something (well at least for most people).

Never gotten a shot since I was a kid, never got the flu as long as I can remember (I'm 23). Sorry if this post is worthless lol
