Headline news:
(preferably cute) white kid disappears
rich white kids commit crime against black person
woman soldier rescued in Iraq
white socialite goes to prison for a month

Not newsworthy:
any black kid disappears
poor black kids commit crime against white person
male soldier killed in Iraq
random inmate gets killed in prison

Some elements of the media readily admit bias. A few years back, there was a brutal home invasion robbery/murder involving black gang members in Kansas City. I believe 3-4 people were murdered during the robbery. Certainly nationwide news worthy. The Los Angeles Times was asked why they did not run the story and the answer from their spokesperson was basically that they did not want to fuel any type of racial backlash. Also a few years ago, there was an incident in Arkansas(I think...might have been Missouri) where 2 homosexual black men kidnapped a 12 or 13 year old boy and tortured and raped him over a significant length of time(at least several days). It went out on AP and no newspaper in Los Angeles area picked it up. It is certainly a sensational story, and deserved national coverage. Finally 30 days late, the Orange County Register ran a small blurb about it. This was after radio talk shows bemoaning the bias of the LA Times. Again LA Times response is that they wanted to avoid backlash against blacks and homosexuals.

Not sure. I live and work in a very racially mixed area and have far more contact with latinos and asians in my everyday living than caucasians. It would be news to me that people expect blacks to be rapists over another ethnic group.
