You keep mentioning Rice. The Bucs released him a couple of months ago.

[/ QUOTE ]

Um, well, no, apparently I did not get that memo.

Anyway, I feel dumb. Thanks for the update.

Regarding Tampa and FO, Aarron S of FO said in a podcast with Bill Simmons that FO's system seems to overrate the Bucs and either the Rams O or the Rams D.

Their prediction system underrates the Rams offense every year. They can't figure out why.

The Rams have the lowest win projection in the NFC btw, but like Tampa, I'm not buying that and neither are the authors.

That sounds right, the O is underrated and the D is considered terrible.

Cowboys I think Romo is mediocre and I'm not willing to give him the benefit of the doubt until I see otherwise. But you (and others) are, so as long as it comes with the Romo caveat I'm fine with this ranking.

[/ QUOTE ]

I was with you, but he has looked pretty good in the preseason and has shown that he could be mediocre. He needs to be real good if they want to make the Super Bowl, but I think playing most of the NFC will only require him to be mediocre. Can he can pull that off?..that's the question.

[ QUOTE ]
Tampa Bay How are they going to fill the holes? It's the same personnel as last year, except everyone is even older. Gaines will help, but probably won't replace Rice full time until next year. Their defense was 22nd last year and I see it getting worse before it gets better.

My eyes popped out of my head when I saw their win projection of 9.0 in the prospectus. Originally I considered moving them higher because of it, but decided that I flat disagreed with the book and kept them near the bottom. Many of the authors, apparently, agree with me and don't like their projection either.

[/ QUOTE ]
I like Cato June and Derrick Brooks alternating strong and weak sides. Their safeties scare me which is why I won't fully commit. Also Gaines Adams has to prove he is as good as advertised. Kiffin is a good coach and I give him some credit to scheme his way through some games. Last year their defense was left out in the cold too often with three and outs and an offense that was really inept. This defense will no longer dominate, but with a quality offense they may improve on last year.

I'm suprised nobody jumped on my Saints pick. Maybe I should have put them lower.

People seem to agree that the Saints won't be quite as good. I think they will regress slightly (drop from 8th in DVOA to something like 11th) but still win ten games and win the South.

Green Bay is way too high, and St. Louis is way too low imo.

I don't know much about Wade Phillips time as a head coach, but his record of 48-42 seems like he was atleast decent. Did he inherit really good teams and underperform?

[/ QUOTE ]

He inherited the Dan Reeves Broncos with John Elway and posted a .500 record before he was fired for Shanahan who went on to win the Super Bowl twice. He took over the Marv Levy Bills and the decline began even though he did make the playoffs and was finished off when he was fired for Greg Williams.

He is a good defensive coach, but as the head man he has seemed a bit clueless.
