Default Beat: Spending more on your pet\'s health than your own.

Just spent $900 on my cat. She has kidney failure and needs IV fluids for the rest of her life, and definitely the start of more to come. She should live for a few more years if treated right. It was a tough call to determine if it was +EV but I love the cat so I guess it is.

What's the most you have spent on a pet?...and what's the limit to which you just say "forget it?" I don't want to seem inhumane but I don't even have health insurance, seems kinda ridiculous. I think this was a pretty close coin flip for me (having never had a pet before this).

Discuss.

Is the cat hooked up on an IV 24/7 or what?
At some point you need to consider your pet's standard of living and cut the cord for its sake (despite the grief you'll feel).

I'd probably go pretty far. I love my cats more than I love most people around me. They also have very distinctive characters, so getting a new cat won't make me happy. $900 would be an easy call and I'd see it as a bad beat. 5K would suck because I'd have to withdraw my roll and be broke, but hypothetically, if it's 100% guaranteed my cat would live another 10 years or so, but would die instantly otherwise, I'd do it. Hypothetically though, because I believe there's no vet around here that charges that much for anything.

So far, the cats have been healthy so they haven't cost much yet.
