I think you played this correctly.

i think i would have 3bet flop to about 30 and went from there. if he just calls you get 2 free cards and an option to call river bet to showdown. it's about the same price to see river both ways, but you maintain control of the hand.
of course if he pushes flop or leads the turn big, we are done with the hand.
