I think this is a clear case of him representing a BPP by cold-calling preflop w/ a random SC or small PP to try and bluff you off QQ+ on the flop.
Not a widely used play, but expert nonetheless. You should be able to see through this and make the call.

Bleh this is a sick spot as is I check the flop. edit: If you are going to fold to a c/r you need to check the flop.
