I use to worry about this a lot too...surprisingly it never comes up. If it did the conversation would go something like this:

Boss: DBass, you've been here for three years, do you have any [censored] idea what you're doing?
Me: Not really but I like the paycheck every couple of weeks.
Boss: I appreciate honesty. See you Monday.
DBass returns to occasionally poking aroung like he knows what the [censored] he's doing

Fact is, most people that are completely overwhelmed by a new job end up quitting on there own. Key here is to never care so much about the job that you feel overwhlemed. (In your case, kids are resilient...what could go wrong?)
