Default Re: Why the hell did I overcall....

[ QUOTE ]
I dont know why you created this thread. You played this hand terribly and you know you played it terribly. Do you really need someone like me to tell you what you already know? Anyways, not 3betting preflop was a big mistake. Given that you called preflop, I would rather check/raise for value/protection than bet/3bet but I suppose that street is close on this particular flop. If the flop came out AT2, check/raising would clearly be better than bet/3betting in my mind.

Turn looks good as long as you know that against some opponents you should be 3betting the turn in this spot. For example, if I was the villain who raised the turn, AK will be the nuts so you can 3bet and protect your hand in this large pot and get more money in with the best hand.

River: This is a very terrible overcall. Im not sure what else to say on this street other than you need to work on your hand reading skills. You bet a drawless flop into a large field including a preflop raiser. The preflop raiser then raises the turn in a protected pot showing lots of strength and you called that raise. Do you see how when a new opponent bets the river after that action your hand will almost never be good? The PFR calling the river bet also significantly lowers your already abysmal odds of winning this hand. You have to have a strong read that the river bettor is insane to make this overcall profitable.

I hope I have satisfied your morbid desire to get flamed on your play of this hand. If you want I'll twist the knife further by saying if you are regularly playing hands this badly you should probably move down and study the game more.

The good news is you know you made a ton of mistakes in this hand. Most people lose money in poker and in life from the mistakes they dont know theyre making. Once you know what you did wrong the correction process is easy. Good luck in the future.

I think bet-3betting is slightly better than check-raising given the preflop play. This flop is as dry as it gets, and the one benefit of the poor preflop play is that his hand could easily be misread for a weaker ace or even some kind of middle pair. Betting out is especially good if there's a flush draw on the board, because that's what you'll get put on.
