Default Live 20/40. Play along part un...

May or may not be interesting. Let's see:

Location: Bay 101 in San Jose, CA
Stakes: $20/$40
Players: Unknown. Moved from broken table and in my first orbit of free hands.

Preflop: (1.5 small bets, 9 players)

I’m UTG+1, raise with Q[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]Q[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] called by HJ, button, small blind and big blind.

Flop: (10 small bets, 5 players) K[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]T[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]5[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]

Check to me, I bet, HJ call, button call, SB call, BB folds.

Turn: (7 big bets, 4 players) Q[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]

Check to me, I bet, HJ raises, all fold, I ???

Part deux and then results coming up.

He doesn't have a K, so he has either AJ/QT/TT or something like A[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]T[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] at worst.

Against most passive Bay players, I call. You obviously have some kind of AK/AA/KK/QQ/JJ/TT type hand and he just doesn't care on a K-Q-T board.

I would call and bet most rivers. River pairs, I c/r.

He raised the preflop aggressor in a 4 handed pot on the turn with a KQT5 board. I think the HJ has rarely less than two pair here, which leaves KT, KQ, QT, TT, KK, 55 and AJ. (ignoring the face/little combos for now). I think even KT and KQ often raise the flop.

I like calling the raise, and reevaluating on the river. East coast live players tend to be passive, and I imagine we're going 4 bets against AJ here often when we 3 bet, not sure how different the bay area is.

I think you can open up his range to include some Kings. KQ, KQs, KTs.

You can also add QJs hearts or spades to the mix, and 55 or TT, all of which we beat.

Obviously we have to worry about AJ/s and J9s.

I think calling with a plan to bet the river is fine, but if the board pairs do not c/r. Bet/3-bet. A straight or two-pair hand is often checking behind when the river pairs.

Three bet. You will be shown two pair here or a smaller set a lot. Then river a Q

I know that it's your 1st orbit, but is the HJ a little old lady or a sunglasses wearing kid. The little old lady only has AJ here and the kid can have as little as a J with another face card or a no pair flush draw.

The little old lady, I'm just calling, and the kid I'm very likely to 3 bet. Where on that continuum is HJ.

call, then lead a paired river and go for a 3 bet. Otherwise checkcall.

Even if we 100% discount j9 from his range, there are still only slightly more plausible 2 pair and set hands you beat. You're often gonna be shown AJ. You don't wanna 3 bet and give him to chance to 4 bet you when you're only a slight favorite.

edit: this is a basic combinatorics question. We can remove a fair amount of the 2 pair hands from his PF range, but we can't do the same with AJ. Tons of players coldcall with AJ offsuit here. Add in J9s (and maybe sometimes offsuit) and we're not much of a favorite, and probably a minor dog. You really don't wanna get 4 bet here. Just call down unless the river pairs. For realz

what? Checkcall most rivers. If we're gonna lead most rivers, we should just 3 bet now. Unless you mean to bet/fold, which I think is beyond AWFUL once we underrep our hand by just calling the turn. Also go for 3 bet on paired river plz. this gives us the best of both worlds against his whole range, since he might get STUPID with us if he has TT.
