BTW, as much as I hate Hoffman, he is about as money as you can have in a closer.

[/ QUOTE ]
Last night looked like he was throwing batting practice. I don't remember a single pitch in the 90s and his stuff didn't seem to move very much. I was making Commodus-rating-girlfriend face at the screen every time he'd groove an 87 MPH throw right over the middle of the plate.

Agreed! But to say he has sucked in these spots over his career is just ridiculous.

LOL at mentioning Pap in the same paragraph as Mo.

[/ QUOTE ]

If Pap is unworthy of such praise, what does he have to do to get it?

Here's the criteria I used: if you're shocked to hear he blew a save, he's a Closer. If such news doesn't shock you in the least, he's a Crumb.

If "that coffee is for closers only," this league only needs two cups (unless that kid in Seattle measures up already, I don't follow the sport closely enough to know).

[/ QUOTE ]

Greatest reliever ever versus a kid, while v v good, who is only in his 2nd season. Give Pap another decade of similar performance and then this comp is legit.

But he has sucked in these spots over his career. I think it is more a matter of the other players concentrating more than Hoffman sucking, but Hoffman sucks.

Mitch Williams doesn't even get an honorable mention here?

[/ QUOTE ]

The question was 'generation,' not alltime throughout the Omniverse.

[/ QUOTE ]

He's younger than Clemens and a year older than Mesa, which puts him in the same generation as the pitchers in the discussion. However, if it makes you feel better, carry on. Don't let the facts get in the way of your hyperbole

tbh, the only memories I have of Norm Charlton is him blowing game after game after game for the Mariners. I was kind of young when he was on their roster, but man, that's all I remember of him.

He hasn't pitched since 97, while Clemens and Mesa still are around today. Don't let your fanatically dictionary nitdom get in the way of common sense.

Roger Clemens

"Through the end of 2006, Clemens's total postseason record is 12-8 in 33 starts, with a 3.66 ERA. Clemens' World Series record is 3-0 in 8 starts, with an ERA of 2.37."

He also throws bats pretty well.

Having him warm up whenever the Padres had a chance to take the lead was asinine. Arm was dead by the time he finally got into the game 4 innings after he should have been pitching.

The "closer" should be the best reliever and should pitch in high-leverage situations, not only save situations, Hoffman should have come in after Bell.
