Stars is on the right track with these PPA freerolls to get people enrolled...you don't need a ton of money if you have numbers; it costs like $5 to be in the AARP and they are one of the most powerful lobbies around.

I agree with Jman, isnt there some political fund raiser we could donate to? I would think our money would talk louder than a phone call or a letter.

[/ QUOTE ]

if we get one hugely organized fund from like poker players ALL OVER.. not just 2p2.. i guarantee this thing gets changed.. a lot of effort but trust me the amount of money raised would get the politicians to change the law and play in the games themselves if they dont already

[/ QUOTE ]

LOL I dont think you realize how much money big lobbying groups have. Random online poker players donating wouldn't even come close.

[/ QUOTE ]

How about Harrahs? Or Steve Wynn?

[/ QUOTE ]

Obviously if they get involved that's a ton of money. But it's naive to think that money solely from individual online players could even approach the horse racing, state lotteries, Indian casinos, and anti-sports betting (read: NFL) lobbies.

If, say, Stars, Party, FTP, Daniel N./FCP, and the B&M casinos get involved then some noise might be made. I have a feeling, though, that the anti-online gambling crowd (not talking ultraconservative right wingers here) can throw just as much, if not more, money at the problem.

Mason you are completely right here. It's not like we can hand each representative a 10k brick and say vote aye. Money is a non-issue if it is viewed as dirty money. It's not like all the drug dealers of the world could organize a huge fund and get drug laws repealed.

The best thing that everyone can do is CALL AND WRITE (not e-mail) their Reps and Senators. Reps and Senators need to be concerned with representing their constituency in order to get re-elected, and each additional phone call and letter is stored in an opinion tracking database.

You do not need to argue with the person on the phone or demand to talk to the Congressman or anything like that. Just call and say "I'd like to express my complete support of HR 2046, The Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act of 2007. Please pass my concerns along to the appropriate member of your staff." You will then likely be asked for your zipcode, or address if you'd like a written response from the Congressman's office.

The PPA will take care of any true lobbying that needs to be done.

this was posted in the leg. forum by The engineer today (more good news!):

"

IGREA has just picked up six additional cosponsors, three of whom supported HR 4411, the Internet Gambling Prohibition and Enforcement Act. As dying bills don't typically pick up cosponsors, it looks like Rep. Frank is working behind the scenes to push this one through.

If you support IGREA (or even if you don't, but you think we should be on the offensive to build political capital), you may consider sending a letter to your congressman and senators if you haven't yet. You might also consider a letter to your newspaper, a post to a blog, etc., if you feel like it.

Cheers.

-------------------------------------------------

New HR 2046 cosponsors

Rep Melancon, Charlie [D-LA] (for HR 4411)
Rep Towns, Edolphus [D-NY] (against HR 4411)
Rep Sanchez, Linda T. [D-CA] (against HR 4411)
Rep McCarthy, Carolyn [D-NY] (for HR 4411; one of the "Fight UIGEA" targets)
Rep Rodriguez, Ciro D. [D-TX] (freshman)
Rep Crowley, Joseph [D-NY] (for HR 4411) "

yay.

So.. I mean. What's a rough timeline for the bill to go from wherever the hell it is now to helping to set up harrahspoker.com? Does the bill specify how online gambling sites will be taxed? If you were a bookie putting odds on this passing, what odds would you put?
