Having a child is a pretty damn important piece of information about a person. What you did wasn't rude at all - it's part of what you are looking for in a relationship.

There are some things that you obviously don't need to tell people on a first (and maybe second date), but they are much smaller things than having a kid.

People are entitled to date who they want to date. That's life. Is it unfair that fat girls have trouble getting guys? Is it unfair if you're ugly and can't get a date? Is it unfair if you're unemployed and a girl doesn't want to date you because of it?

The fact that you're older IMO should give actually give you even more right to be picky, since you don't want to get caught up in a long relationship with someone you're not that into or serious about.
