Default 15/30 2-7 home game

so i like to gamble. .

tight but bad UTG raises.

i call with 256xx, bad player calls in the back, blinds fold, 3 way action.

utg draws 1, i draw 2, late position draws 2. i pick up a 3 and high card.

UTG bets, i call, button calls.

UTG draws 1, i draw one, late position draws two.
i have 2356x

UTG checks!, i check (?), late position checks.

UTG draws 1, i draw one and hit and 8, late position draws 2.

UTG bets, i call (?) with 86532, late position folds.

what say you? this doesn't seem like optimal play to me. . .

2nd draw is an autobet with your improving and check from 1st-position player.
You could fold the late-position player and if UTG isn't tricky you could be pat here and "bluff" the river. Or, depending on the brick you drew on the 2nd, you could draw one to a pretty good holding.

Gotta call with an 86 the way the hand went down.

2nd draw is not an auto-bet when you have this straight draw type of hand. Im pretty happy to get a free shot at improving here. A better idea to try to fold the third player is raising after first draw when you improve.

The river is very close. You got the best hand here a ton, but its very close between raising and just calling . If you have UTG beat youll always gain just one more bet, but can get three bet by either player. I like calling here a lot, because you should get a decent amount of overcalls here from the third player. So you lose nothing and protect yourself from getting creemed if your hand is 2nd best.

Agree with InWiththeBest in general but did he notice that LP guy drew two on the end? Tough for him to hit much to overcall with. I think its at least close to a raise. I'd 3 bet preflop if I were going to play this hand but I think folding is probably better.

I didnt see he drew 2. My bad.. It makes me lean a bit closer to raising but I think you still get an overcall here if he hit a 10 (maybe J) or better.

i was drunk at the time (and not thinking my best) thought guy behind me who gets v. curious on the river might pay off with any made hand, even a queen. also UTG's tight in general and is new to 2-7. so for him to raise UTG predraw, check the 2nd draw, then bet, i was pretty confident he was drawing to a seven. i should've realized that he would bet maybe even a nine in this spot and since i'm drawing to a better 8, i could've raised.

i think the river is closer to a raise in this game.

btw, UTG made a 87xxx and i won.

rough nines and even tens were taking down monster pots. in a previous pot, same guy who raised UTG, check/called with a pair of sevens and beat a straight (the guy who had a straight tossed the six with 23456 on the 3rd draw and picked up another six!)

256 is a long term trap hand that hits too many straights and/or bad kicker hands, you can open with it but you cannot usually call 2 bets with it. You want to be in position and you can even find a way to dump it vs significant action against good oponents.

All the other advice from IWTB & Donkey is spot on as usual.

i agree that DD is way ahead of me in TD and IWTB has great fundamentals.

TT, about 256 being a loser, do you think playing this in a wild game is going to push this back to neutral EV?

nope. In fact it might make your decisions tougher when you are in a situation where you normally know you should fold.
