Yeah, you should be able to get some compensation. If you go to court, it'll deal with a verbal declaration which isn't rock solid. This should have been spelled out in writing with a site drawing. Also it would have been smart to mark the trees to be kept or removed. (20/20 hindsight)

[/ QUOTE ]This isn't totally related, but they recommend if you need a leg amputated or something, to write "THIS ONE" and "NOT THIS ONE" in permanent marker on your body to make sure they don't amputate the wrong one which has happened in a few cases.

[/ QUOTE ]

Haha is this a joke or not? I know wrong-side amputations and operations have happened but this is pretty funny in either case.

[/ QUOTE ]

Not exactly the same thing, but when I had arthroscopic knee surgery, my doctor came in and asked me which leg it was (unnerving in and of itself), and then marked it. Definitely took me by surprise.

how are you going to address their claim that you merely roundhouse kicked the trees into the ground to avoid paying for their services?

[/ QUOTE ]this was actually really good

You can't "own" a tree.

possession is 9/10ths of the law, and it sounds like you still possess their payment.

It'd be sweet if the world worked that way though. I mean, except for the anarchy and whatnot.

yeah 4500 seems like a lot for this job, especially if they suck

[/ QUOTE ]
the job was to clear ~1/4 acre of basically woods in the back yard, and 1 side of the front yard. this includes clearing the unwanted trees (and some of the wanted ones apparently), pulling stumps, grading the land. the front yard has a very large oak that apparently would be very difficult to down considering its location.
the first estimate we got was $14k. i dont know if $4500 was too high, but it was the lowest, and our neighbor had used this guy as well and sai dhe had no problems.
perhaps i got what i paid for in the end.

I generally think that construction, auto repair, and general contracting (tree removal) are all sectors where if you know nothing about the industry or don't have a friend of a friend to take the job... you will get screwed.

My dad has been a certified arborist and sold tree work as long as I've been alive. Despite that, I know almost nothing about it, so I'll ask him what he thinks tonight. Based on what he's told me about what other trees go for, I'm pretty sure these trees are worth A LOT more than $4500, and probably significantly closer to $45,000.
