Choi hasn't been the same since he had that concussion while playing for the small bears

[/ QUOTE ]

About 10 minutes into the delay when Choi was lying in the infield, a friend of mine asked this gem: "Is Hee Sop Choi Japanese for 'delay of game'?"

[/ QUOTE ]

Choi is Korean.

Choi is nothing but a backup first basemen He's a good backup, but a backup none the less.

The Cleveland Indians already have a first baseman better than Choi in Ben Broussard. They have a quality backup in Eduardo Perez. They have a decent prospect in Ryan Garko. There is no reason for the Indians to pay $750k AND be forced to waive somebody when they have capable players at every role that Choi could fill.

in your opinion. personally, i think he should start for the red sox and youk at 3B. if a guy can start at 1B for a 90 win+ team, then hes not a 'solid backup'.

his top 3 comps for this year are:

ortiz 2003
kusick 1976
durazo 2001
hafner 2004

those are not 'backup' seasons. of course he may not have a season like any of those guys, but his career to this point shows huge similarities to guys ready to "breakout".

There is a pretty big difference in body type between those guys and Choi.

1. Height and weight of pro athletes are never reliable.
2. Body fat and muscle tone can't be figured from said weight and height.

One difference between Choi and Ortiz/Hafner is, scouts were still very high on Ortiz/Hafner as hitters when they broke out. Choi has supposedly lost bat speed since he put up those monster numbers in the minors, making his comps not quite as effective.

One thing that is similar amongst those players (I don't know anything about the guy from the 70's) is that they are all DH's.

This is due to Dodgers hitting coaches telling Choi to shorten his swing. This will stop in Boston.
