We must stop the flow of information
Internet is the new Afghanistan
"The Internet is the new battleground against Islamist extremism because it provides ideology that could radicalize Westerners who might then initiate home-grown attacks, New York police commissioner Raymond Kelly said on Wednesday." |

Re: We must stop the flow of information
From the article:
[ QUOTE ] The report found that the challenge for Western authorities was to identify, pre-empt and prevent home-grown threats, which was difficult because many of those who might undertake an attack often commit no crimes along the path to extremism. [/ QUOTE ] Can this kind of rhetoric really continue? I keep getting a stronger and stronger feeling that we're all doomed. |

[/ QUOTE ] There are certain areas of infrastructure (eg the underside of the GW Bridge) where it has been illegal to take pictures since soon after 9/11. I believe thats true in every major city. |

[ QUOTE ] From the article: [ QUOTE ] The report found that the challenge for Western authorities was to identify, pre-empt and prevent home-grown threats, which was difficult because many of those who might undertake an attack often commit no crimes along the path to extremism. [/ QUOTE ] Can this kind of rhetoric really continue? I keep getting a stronger and stronger feeling that we're all doomed. [/ QUOTE ] Is your position that it is not a challenge for law enforcement to prevent domestic terrorist attacks? [/ QUOTE ] I may not have grabbed the best quote from the article to illustrate my point, reading it again I think that's almost certainly the case. Apologies for the confusion. What worries me is that this rhetoric is used to intrude more and more on private property and law-abiding citizens right to privacy. Like the quote says, it's a challenge because often a terrorist attack is their first crime. It seems like the subtext is implying that we need to start monitoring behavior before any actual crime is committed, a fairly unsurprising extension of the preemptive strike mentality. Even if you don't think this particular article suggests that, there are plenty of people/institutions that do. As for preventing domestic terrorism being a problem... sure it might be difficult to predict who is going to be the next terrorist, but the fact remains that what is usually classified as terrorism is an extremely rare event. There are lots of laws that are broken very frequently that are more of a challenge to curtail that law enforcement partially ignores due to knee-jerk emotion-charged overestimation of the importance of terrorism. |
