Default Re: Charles Barkley wins $700,000 in a weekend

Barkley is one of the many celebrities i plan on inviting to my wedding. I think he will show up in sweats and a t-shirt, demand a check for the appearance, and eat all the shrimp.

I saw him once talking about his gambling problem on ESPN. He was saying how he doesn't have to stop gambling, but learn to bet 2 or 3 thousand a hand instead of twenty or thirty thousand.

The best gambling/sports story I've ever heard involves my Uncle, Dad, Patrick Ewing, and Charles Oakley.

My Uncle loves to get hammered and gamble. Like big time. We always kid around about how we could never lose him in a casino because after he's been to one table, everybody knows his name. One time while playing craps, we were all hammered up and this older dude was complaining about us being "loud and not focusing on the game". My uncle takes a green chip and throws it at the guy's chest and says "here now quit whining" Funny stuff.

So as the story goes, years back when the Knicks were the Knicks, my Dad and Uncle went on a sick blackjack heater. They were up a ton of money. Then they look over at the "high limit" table area and see who else, but Oakley and Ewing. They stroll up and take a seat. They were betting the table minimum (I think it was $500) and Ewing was betting a ton (like 5 figures a hand). Anyway, my Dad and Uncle continued their antics, yammerin left and right, fist pumps, getting wasted and winning big. All the while, there's Ewing, getting pounded. Just like 18 lose to 19, 12, 14, 24 bust! Couldn't win a hand. And right next to him was Oakley talking trash. "Look at them boys, now that's how you play cards. You sit here like a chump you ain't never gonna win". Ewing stuck it out, manning face and all.

The end results are unknown due to mass amounts of booze.

"It's a stupid, bad habit. I have a problem," Barkley said of his gambling. "But the problem is when you can't afford it. I can afford to gamble. I didn't kill myself when I lost two and half million dollars … I like to gamble and I'm not going to quit."

you tell 'em, man..

I'm surprised there aren't more degenerate ex-pro-athletes trying to be in on the poker scene. Someone should get Barkley to lose his money to us (meaning u guys not me) instead of blackjack.

I often play NL against a retired (from about a ten year career) NBA former starter that is about the least degenerate player I've ever played. During the first few plays I wondered if he was ever going to play a hand.

Come to think of it all three NBA types I've played often have been pretty snug.

I wouldn't call him a nutpeddler... I made a play preflop with 88 one time in the 3-5 AI for ~500 and he called me with KQo... plus he gets stacked every time he plays the 500 game.

IIRC, Bill Laimbeer plays 2/5 NL at Greektown in Detroit ...
