Default New computer build

Time to build a new computer!

Some friends of mine managed to hook me with WoW which has rekindled an old interest in PC gaming. Also for photo/video editing and I'll probably be using this to rip DVD and eventually BD/HD-DVD to a media server soon. Oh, and some poker here and there as well.

Main concerns:

Is an 8800GT powerful enough to play recent games at 1920x1200? If not, are games going to look horrible if I run them at a non-native resolution? I'd be willing to consider an 8800GTX if it would make enough of a difference. I guess SLI would be another option, but I'd like to stick with a P35 chipset based on what I've read recently.

Would I be better off with a faster Core 2 Duo instead of the Core 2 Quad? I've never overclocked a processor before but have read enough about it and the potential of the C2Q's that I'd be willing to give it a shot if that makes any difference in your opinion.

I'm pretty much sold on the case, keyboard (nifty LCD FTW whether it's useful or not), mouse and buying from NewEgg, but would listen to suggestions on anything else.

I know you said you were already decided on the case but I loath the Antec 900 (the neon has been done to death and is mostly for people who want to think they're cool)

If you really want to be balla get this.

Oh yeah, the computer itself looks fine, although if you're going to be doing alot of video work max out the ram and get 64bit vista.

the lcd is useless on the g15 keyboard.

q6600 is better for your likely needs than the c2d

vista 64bit is likely to be better for you; there's a decent chance you'll upgrade to 4gb of ram in the future

curious about your choice of the 775 board. Are you planning on using two graphics cards?

I dont know about 1920x1200, but the 8800 is a very good card from what I have read. And no, I dont think it will look really [censored] at less than native.

I like Antec cases, i have two systems with the Sonata III and E6700 processors. One at work and one at home. Actually, the work one has a QX6700 now

About the case choice: I don't like the neon either. In fact, I'm probably about 15 years too old to be using neon. It's more the fans and the USB/firewire/headphone inputs on the top of the case that I liked. I'm going to look around a little more.

As for Vista 64: I don't have any experience at all with Vista. I need to look into this a little more also, I guess, because I was under the impression that it would be sort of a crapshoot getting software/drivers to work with Vista 64 in much the same way as it was with the 64-bit versions of XP.

Well Antec cases are some of the best, so no worries there (even if I have an irrational dislike of the 900).

Vista 64 is much improved with drivers and whatnot than XP was.

i think the forum consensus on Vista64 is that it was difficult six months or more ago, but all is now fine and dandy.

No. Was just wondering if I'd need 2 cards in SLI to get good framerates in recent games in order to get decent framerates at the monitor's native resolution (1920x1200).

I've been out the the PC loop for a while (my last build was with an Athlon XP 64 3000) so correct me if I'm wrong here. I've read a lot of good things about the P35 chipset, but from what I understand it doesn't support SLI. So if I need SLI for a good framerate, I assume I'd need to get a motherboard based on an nVidia chipset instead. Correct?

Since you have some experience with them -- are the Antec 900 cases quiet?
