Re: Grammatical Error In Forum
[ QUOTE ]
Two things: -First of all, "their" is not right as an indefinite gender pronoun. Citing "the Dictionary" does not convince me otherwise. -Second, "his or her" is meh. Give me an old-school "his." -Third, come on, it's 2+2. It's not really indefinite gender, it's a guy. [/ QUOTE ] Language is mutable. Changes in usage occur. A true grammar nit keeps up with the changes. It sounds like you [plural form to include OP as well] are arguing that things were so much better before all these irritating kids got a hold of the language and broke it. This makes you a curmudgeon, not an expert. This battle has been fought and lost. You may as well be arguing the "healthy" vs. "healthful" distinction. Besides, this usage isn't even new. It is centuries old. When a singular noun does not refer to a specific individual, it can acceptably be replaced with a plural pronoun. You may not like it. You may think it sounds awkward. You will just have to lump it, however. |
