Vista 64 Bit Question

Getting ready to build me a new desktop and trying to decide if I want to go with the 64 Bit Vista or not. Keep reading alot of reviews saying that alot of programs will not work with the 64 Bit yet.

Mainly just want to make sure that PT and PAHUD and Stars/Full Tilt will work fine. Thats pretty much all I do on my desktop. Seen quite a few posts about Vista here but haven't seen any mentioning 64 bit version. TIA

I just sent pokerstars and Full Tilt an email with this very question as I am in the same position, will let you know what they say, not sure about PT and PAHUD though.

Yes PokerStars will definitely work well with 64 bits Windows Vista, you
only will need to configure the security settings but beside that you will
be good to use it with that version.

I run Vista x64 and virtually every program I have works. It's a myth that lots of software won't work. Sure, I lost a couple things, like "AllSnap" (a utility to make windows lock together), and I had to get 64-bit-specific versions of a few system utilities like screenshot programs... but very few things didn't work.

Most of those reviews are referring to hardware drivers for older hardware, such as 2 year old video cards and such. If you're building a new box of new parts, it wouldn't be a problem.

One thing, though -- once you choose x64, you can't switch without re-installing on a blank-formatted hard drive. Make sure its what you want. There's really only one reason you would want to consider x64, and that's if you want to run more than 2 GB of RAM. If you want to run 4 GB of RAM or more (now, or in the future), then x64 is mandatory, or you won't be able to access all that memory due to video card mapping and overloading.

Vista LOVES lots of RAM, so I would recommend x64 -- it frees you up to have the option of going to 4 GB and beyond if you need to.

Thank you for your interest in Full Tilt Poker.

We find that Full Tilt Poker will work fine with Windows Vista for most
players. However, since Vista is a new operating system, we are still
receiving feedback and refining our software for this platform.

That being said, Windows Vista has the ability to run programs in
compatibility mode. You may also want to disable the ?Visual Themes? and
?Desktop Composition? settings if the program is not operating properly.

To configure the compatibility mode for the Full Tilt Poker application
and disable ?Visual Themes? and ?Desktop Composition?, please do the
following:

1) Locate the file 'FullTiltPoker.exe" and right click on it
2) Select ?Properties? from the menu
3) Select the ?Compatibility? tab
4) Check ?Run this program in compatibility mode for:?
5) Choose to run the program in ?Windows XP Service Pack 2?
compatibility mode
6) Check ?Disable Visual Themes?
7) Check ?Disable Desktop Composition?
8) Click ?OK?

Please note, if you are having any difficulty installing the software, I
request you to please follow the following steps by locating the file
'FullTiltSetup.exe" and right clicking on it.

Since Vista has more strict security policies than Microsoft's previous
operating systems, we find that players? who log into Vista from a user
account will be unable to save hand histories or player notes. Please do
the following once the steps above have been taken.

1) Go into ?Control Panel?
2) Click ?User Accounts?
3) Select your ?User ID?
4) Please ensure that you have administrative privileges or you are a
member of the administrative group.
5) Click ?Turn User Account Control? ?ON? if it is ?OFF?
6) Restart the computer

Now run the Full Tilt Poker again and see if can save player notes and
hand histories.

Please note: Granting your user administrative privileges can make your
system more vulnerable to unwanted system changes. With the newly added
privileges, you user account has more access to how the system
functions.
