Lincoln may not have said that "quote", but his actions certainly were consistent with it. Article by Tom DiLorenzo about the "American Bastille".

If that be so, it still doesn't change the larger point being made. To quote Greenwald's column:

"Attaturk makes the excellent point that the inconsequential use of vulgar words or "offensive" comments about religion from bloggers will provoke all sorts of hand-wringing and media attention. But truly indecent and dangerous ideas flowing from some of the country's most influential political figures in mainstream media outlets -- justified by fabricated quotes -- are treated with respect, and trigger almost no controversy and never any consequences for their advocates.

As Attaturk correctly notes, while low-level bloggers for the Edwards campaign were recently forced from their jobs, "Frank Gaffney will suffer no ill affects of this incredible wank-a-riffic behavior as he goes on FoxNews and fill-in-the-blank right-wing radio bloviators and as he continues to get his paycheck from some ironically named 'think-tank'."

Also, as an aside, whatever Lincoln's actions were, and whatever our subsequent judgements, it seems to me that what should immediately jump to mind is that they took place in the context of a civil war, an obvious and significant difference to the situation today.

Surely you don't agree with Gaffney's position??

[/ QUOTE ]
Of course not. But certainly such ideas as Gaffney's should be anticipated given the treatment of Lincoln's regime by schools.

An ironic Lincoln quote:
"Allow the President to invade a neighboring nation, whenever he shall deem it necessary to repel an invasion, and you allow him to do so, whenever he may choose to say he deems it necessary for such purpose – and you allow him to make war at pleasure…. Study to see if you can fix any limit to his power in this respect, after you have given him so much as you propose. If, to-day, he should choose to say he thinks it necessary to invade Canada, to prevent the British from invading us, how could you stop him? You may say to him, "I see no probability of the British invading us" but he will say to you 'be silent; I see it, if you don’t.'"
