I think a lot of people are missing the key point: you can't _imagine_ how it would _feel_ to be so depressed as to consider suicide, because your imagination is simply incalpable of doing it properly. Indeed you can't even remember it properly now even if in the past you DID feel that way. The only people who can tell you what its like are those actually super-depressed NOW. Daniel Gilbert (a psychology prof at harvard) has written a good book on this.
So to say 'I wouldn't commit suicide because of x/y (eg family)' is meaningless becuase its a rational thought generated in a non-super-depressed state, and however strongly you may think your imagination is calpable of predicting 'if I felt x then I would do y', your imagination is flawed (and this has been extensively demonatrated in studies).
