Default How Much Should The Poor Be Taxed?

For 2006 in America, your first $7,550 of income was taxed 10%, and 15% of every dollar up to $30,650 was taxed. This means that for an individual making a very measly $15,000 in 2006, $1,872 was confiscated from him; $1,872 that could have gone toward rent, food, or health care for someone living at the poverty line. Roughly 12.5%

I'm not going to get into my thoughts on socialism, but I think that any reasonable person should think that taxing the poor is incredibly [censored] up; yet neither of the two great American parties seem to have any interest in getting rid of the Federal income tax for individuals living below the "poverty line."

How much should the poor be taxed, and if any amount, why?

[/ QUOTE ]No option for a negative income tax? Not that I'm recommend that, but I imagine some people might want that option.

The social security tax is incredibly regressive. Giving the 24.8 percent back would make sense for people making under 20k

You're only talking about AGI, which isn't so bad. The taxes you complain of are on income after all deductions are made. So someone who is taxed on 30K of income actually earned far more than that (in most cases).

The real crime is FICA which get taken out of every dollar UP FRONT. If you earn a gross of 1000 for the year the government will take 153. Period.

That is truly disgusting, but that's socialism for you.

If only we had some sort of tax credit for poor people earning income. We could call it... the Earned Income Tax Credit. Excuse me, I need to step out and write the president immediately.
