Default 8-16 Last Night

Here's an interesting (to me anyway) thing that happened in the 8-16 at Wynn last night.

A player is "all-in" in a pot and loses all of his chips. He's now sitting in his seat with no chips in front of him.

The dealer is now dealing a new hand. When he gets to our player of note, he asks if he is going to buy more chips. The player responds, "I'm five hundred behind" (To those new to B&M, that means he has $500 on the way).

The dealer deals him in.

He goes on to win this pot (without chips of his own, which is fine as long as he has money on the way).

We soon learn that he has no money on him (other then the pot he just won betting on the honor system).

He asks for a marker. They send him to the casino host (or something of that ilk). He is told the chips he just won must stay on the table while he tries to get the $500 he had said he had coming.

As he's gone, the talk is.......

What happens IF he comes back with zero money?

One floorman (but not the head floor on duty) told us the pot would more then likely go to the second best hand (This is the California way he said) but that he would have to check with the lead floor to make sure.

I was at this table but not in this hand.
A good friend of mine had
the second best hand and said he would be happy to chop it with the third player (in the hand on the river) if the guy comes back with no money.

Alas, he WAS able to get a marker for the $500 and all was well with the world upon his return.

I really like the Wynn btw. I thought this was an interesting situation. Feedback?

Thanks,

Howard

I would hope they would ban someone from the cardroom for saying they had 500 behind that wasn't actually physical cash on their person. At least prevent him from playing behind in the future. Also, I know it might be seen as rude, but I don't think a dealer should deal someone in behind unless they see the physical cash. If they do, I think they should be responsible if this guy loses and doesn't have the money to back it up.

Generally the players accept the action and the risk when a player indicates he will play behind.

If he wins he still must add the money. If he wins and he doesn't add the money then he is dealt out and should be sent home or barred.

If he loses and can't come up with the money then all the house can do is deal out or bar the player until he makes good with the player(s) who won pots while he was playing behind.

I floored Hollywood Park small limits in the late nineties and only had to do this a few times. This procedure was per the instructions of a shift manager. BTW, I'm not 100% sure this is the way it's handled most or all card clubs and I've never seen it happen as a player.

So, would it be my right, as a player in the hand, to stop all action until the chip runner shows up? I've never seen it done, and I can't believe you'd be very popular if you tried it.

"was this guy a local?"

While (at Wynn), I THOUGHT I recognized 2+2ers....

1) Tommy Angelo walking to his $5-10 no-limit game

2) Goofball waiting to get called for a seat.

3) Gamble-Gamble chit-chatting near the cashier's cage.

And I KNEW I recognized.....

1) An Asian girl I played a lot of $15-30 with over the summer at Bellagio in the Wynn's other $8-16 table going.

2) A regular $20-40 M.I.L.C.R.* from Mirage at the table next to mine (Wynn 15-30).

3) A few long time friends in the room I know reasonably well.......

*************************

THIS guy ("Mr I'm $500 Behind") I'm not really sure. His face looks vaguely familiar but he's a major calling station (pretty much never folded a hand, cold-called multiple bets pre-flop with any two and almost never folded to a flop bet, as far as I could tell).

So he looked a little like a local but played a lot like a guy on vacation.

I need to get back to the Wynn more. Hooters is making me fat. YMMV.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Best Wishes

Howard

The floors' way of handling it is reasonable but the second best hand won't always be known as players often muck when being shown the winner. From now on I'm showing my cards under these circumstances.

The offending player has to be warned that if he does it again he will be barred. For the first time there is always an excuse i.e. "I forgot that I gave that $500 to my wife....", etc.

EDIT: I've reconsidered.

There would be no "next time" for this guy. He just lost his "I'm playing behind" privileges. He never gets another hand without putting the cash up-front.
