Depends on the speed of running.

Slow running can make your muscles weaker and smaller

Fast running can make your muscles stronger and larger

I've always agreed with Thremp, walking a mile and running a mile burn virtually the same amt of calories because you're doing virtually the same amt of work. But they're not totally equal:

1. You do slightly more work running because your body is going a slightly greater distance on account of spending more time in the air.

2. Most exercise also has an afterburn period, where you are still burning more calories after you stop exercising. It's called EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption), and the harder/longer you work out, the more you get. I think lifting heavy weights is also associated with a pretty big afterburn effect.
