Who is most recognizable worldwide?
Not who is good, who sucks, not who is most important. Just who would people most recognize a picture of. For the pope, lets assume that you'd have to pick Benedict out of pictures of various popes.
Rank them: Tiger Woods Michael Jordan Paul McCartney David Beckham George W. Bush Pope Benedict XVI

I think Oprah would be in that group, and select actors that starred in international hits (think DiCaprio and Winslet, and probably Tom Cruise).
Edit: I suck at reading OP - the post quoted before me is probably correct, although I think Jordan is more recognizable than the Pope.
