Re: Mike Marshall\'s Pitching Method
It's interesting stuff. The release point is farther forward, so the limited speed at which the pitchers can throw (usually only low 80's at the most) theoretically produces the same reaction time as a 90-92 mph fastball thrown normally.
His message is often lost because he's a weirdo, but there's a lot of interesting stuff in there. |

Re: Mike Marshall\'s Pitching Method
Like I said, Marshall's ideas are lost in his partial insanity, but he has a lot of valid points.
Put yourself in the position of a GM in baseball today: You have two options in the third round of the draft, and your choices are: Pitcher A: -65 on the scouting scale (20-80 range) -High coachability -Wants a $900,000 bonus Pitcher B: -70 on the scouting scale (20-80 range) -Impossible to coach -Will sign for next to nothing Pitcher B is the Marshall student. No pitching coach can help them when they get in a jam, no catcher can really learn his stuff and pick up his release point accurately due to lack of experience. |

any thoughts on the conspiracy to eliminate sparks from the game? taking him out once he put guys on base in the hope that they would score? WTF? [/ QUOTE ] I haven't heard any of the conspiracy theories, but [ QUOTE ] The Cincinnati Reds drafted Sparks in 1995, tired of his act and, a few weeks after he punched a wall and broke his hand in '97, released him. [/ QUOTE ] Certainly sounds like the kind of guy who will lose it, and i would imagine that any competent manager would know this and he going to be on a much shorter leash on the mound than your average guy. I had a friend who had a minor league try out (low farm league stuff) his senior year in high school with the Atlanta Braves that he missed. A week before it was scheduled he broke his hand punching first base after flying out in a summer league game. Seriously, who is going to give him another chance after that? (He had an anger management problem, but was only a danger to himself and inanimate objects). Its hard to blame managers since a lot of the time fringe guys like Marshall will attract fringe players as well. |

Re: Mike Marshall\'s Pitching Method
In the yahoo article it mentions Marshall smiling when he watches Roger Clemens pronate his forearm during his fastball motion. Roger is currently 44 and healthy, could this be one of the reasons? Has anyone noticed this aspect of Clemens' motion?
