Default US faces US$100 billion fine for web gambling ban

US facing fine for online gambling ban

The disputed concessions arise from Antigua's victory earlier this year when the WTO ruled that the US violated its treaty obligations by excluding online Antiguan gaming operators, while allowing domestic operators to offer various forms of online gaming. Instead of complying with the ruling, the Bush administration withdrew the sizeable gambling industry from its free trade commitments. As a result, all 151 WTO members are considering seeking compensation for the withdrawal equal to the size of the entire US land-based and online gaming market, estimated at nearly US$100 billion.

Yeah - im pretty sure all the US needs to do is turn around and say "we aint paying, bub" and there is nothing the WTO or its trade members can or will do.

This is big news, and a whole lot different than Antigua alone pushing it via the WTO.

The fact is, I'm a bit surprised nothing happened earlier (maybe it did at less public diplomatic channels). Britain was especially hurt.

The Economist wrote a leader describing the ban as protectionist last year, and the British tabloid press was more venomous, openly asking "these are supposed to be our allies?" after the ban erased hundreds of millions of pounds value from publically traded companies.

LOL. The obvious reply is to write that this must have been written by a Democrat but I have too many Democrat friends. To lump this abortion in with their political party would be downright cruel.
