Ur-Quan is just Star Control 2 renamed and tweaked for windows. So yeah, of course it's good. Freespace 2 is quais-legally available for free and it's a fantastic game.


Anyway, the best free-at-release game ever is either that multiplayer Wolfenstein game from 2002ish or America's Army.

Nethack is obviously the correct answer. If you get past the ASCII graphics the game has utterly unbelievable depth. And after a while you learn to love how it looks.
