Villain had lost a third of his chips in the previous hand doing something silly. If I don't believe that AA and KK are in his range, is this a call? Or is this a spot where I should fold AK early?

limping sometimes is ok if your against very aggressive players who will raise with a lot less than AK. call is standard imo.
