Want to get into BJJ/GJJ (Brazilian Ju Jitsu)
Hello a Gracie Ju Jitsu school opened up near me recently, and i am interesting in attending it. Their supposed to call me about a trial class, they havent yet.
Anyways, before i pay or sign contract if any... i would like to know what i should look for or check or ask when i am there for my trial class to make sure this is a good Dojo and not just [censored] that they teach from UFC tapes. |

You can get a BJJ for about $20 in most towns.

Re: Want to get into BJJ/GJJ (Brazilian Ju Jitsu)
Mats.
If they require you to get a gi, see if they're dicking you on the price. It has become somewhat customary to rip off students by demanding they purchase gi's or uniforms directly from the school at a gigantic mark-up, and it's often the cheapest stuff available, or at one vendor only. To me this is a bad sign of the school's attitude toward students in general. You should be able to get a gi without getting ripped off. You might want to ask, if it's a school that has many training sessions throughout the week/month, if you can get a "make-up" class if you have to occasionally miss a class, at another time that has classes of the right level anyway. A school with a good attitude toward its students won't have a "Gotcha!" attitude that burns you if you can't make it once in a while, or could only make it so late that there's no point. Picking a schedule and pretty much sticking to it is to be expected, though. And you can expect to have to make up any missed classes within a short period of time, or forfeit them. Oh, and personally, I'd check out their rules on respect and personal hygiene. You don't want some garlicky ass-breath breathing all over you during sparring, or have to be touching somebody filthy. |

Re: Want to get into BJJ/GJJ (Brazilian Ju Jitsu)
try asking the question here:
http://mma.tv/tuf/index.cfm?ac=SetMa...=11&PID=11 or here: http://www.nhbgear.com/forum/ if you want a good answer. 1. where is the school located? 2. who is the instructor? 3. what is the price? typically you would sign up for like a certain price per month for unlimited training, less for a certain number of classes per week. go take the trial class, see if you like the instructor, the format, the people. post back here or on those other forums and ask a few more questions. if you have any other q's let me know. like blarg said, make sure you have short nails, smell clean all over, and take out/of your jewellery (if you're that type- jewellery wtf) you probably won't need a uniform (jiu jitsu gi) for the first night, take some shorts and a t shirt or rash guard, nothing with zippers/pockets/snaps. if they want you to wear one (if it's not a no-gi class) they probably have a loner. don't get roped into buying a [censored] and/or overpriced one like blarg said. it's easy to check the going rates online, just know the brand name. if you need recommendations for buying one once you decide to take the plunge, let me know. |
