people will be pissed off and make a stink about the "privacy issue" (ad algorithms accessing their info), but no one will actually stop using facebook.

kind of like when the news feed rolled out.

using intensely personal info

[/ QUOTE ]

Information about people's favourite TV shows, quotes, bands whatever that's shared with whoever adds them, or in myspaces case any person who views their profile is nowhere near 'intensely personal info'.

Maybe op was pointing out the fact that our capitalist society is driving people towards thinking they actually NEED something when in reality it is just a desire and personalized ads are just another tool for corporations to treat us like we are consumers, a statistic, rather than a human.

How dare they advertise for things Im interested in! I want to be forced to see ads for stuff I could not care less about!

Seriously what is it people don't like about this? Ads in general are annoying but its their frequency and intrusiveness not their specialized content that is bad.

Take a step back and view it from a different perspective for a second.

Ads in general appeal to our selfishness our greed. Personalized ads on your facebook acct. where does it stop? Will we all be wearing t-shirts in the next 20 yrs that have holographic ads that change every 20 seconds? Another issue is this desire that we as a society want all of these "unnecessary" material objects or that we have to consistenly upgrade our current possesions. The problem with this is that it causes exploitation of other countries, other human beings. Now I am not saying Capatilism is bad and I am not a Socialist but it seems things are heading in the wrong direction.

This is probably pointless to bring up in OOT but whatever.
