a set is obviously stronger in absolute strength, and you probably win more on average per hand with them, but i think trips account for a bigger part of a winning player's long-term profits. most people play paired boards so terribly.

I don't think so, I think with a set you more often get action and get to play a big pot with a worse hand. Especially if you occasionally get away from bottom set at the right times.
