Default US faces US$100 billion fine for web gambling ban

US facing fine for online gambling ban

The disputed concessions arise from Antigua's victory earlier this year when the WTO ruled that the US violated its treaty obligations by excluding online Antiguan gaming operators, while allowing domestic operators to offer various forms of online gaming. Instead of complying with the ruling, the Bush administration withdrew the sizeable gambling industry from its free trade commitments. As a result, all 151 WTO members are considering seeking compensation for the withdrawal equal to the size of the entire US land-based and online gaming market, estimated at nearly US$100 billion.

Yeah - im pretty sure all the US needs to do is turn around and say "we aint paying, bub" and there is nothing the WTO or its trade members can or will do.

it doesnt matter what the WTO decides to do or how big the fine is because the US govt doesnt care and just wont pay it and theyll keep doing w/e they want.

The problem with that is: The US wants/needs the WTO to control other members, like China. If it just completely ignores the WTO in this case, it will basically kill the WTO and any future sanctions will hold no water.

For sure. The US may find a way to wriggle out of this, but they will definitely not just ignore it. It's a lot more serious than that.
