That's going to be hilarious when they boo him after he goes 4 for 5, but strikes out in the 9th in a loss tomorrow.

maybe the gods are cursing him for that cheap play he made where he knocked the ball out of the 1b glove and pretended he didnt

[/ QUOTE ]

Ha! If he did that in the 50s Don Drysdale would have hit him in the head with his next pitch. Kicking the ball out of a fielders glove during a slide was then an art form that often left the fielder slashed or spiked and started many a brawl.

Kicking the ball out of a glove during a slide is hard play.
Yelling into the ears of an infielder is bush league under all circumstances.

Tom Hicks would pretty much fellate Scott Boras any chance he had. I mean, he also gave Chan Ho Park $55m...

I wonder, if you asked 100 random baseball fans, what A-rods career postseason BA is, what they would say? I think they'd probably average around .150 or something. And thats EXACTLY because of selecting only the last 40 ABs or whatever. This type of selection bias is really pretty terrible and dishonest, IMO.

its the whole 'what have you done for me lately' mentality

This reared its ugly head big-time with Glavine, Mets fans, and the NY media over the last week. There certainly might be reasons to not re-sign an expensive 41 year old pitcher, but his performance in the final game (and a situation in which the Mets should never have been in to begin with) of a season in which he went 13-8 is not one of them.

Yelling into the ears of an infielder is completely acceptable under all circumstances.

Would they be in the playoffs without ARod? No. But man has he sucked in the playoffs as a Yankee. And the bigger the at-bat, the more he chokes.

If non-World Series at bats count as "big at bats" then why dont regular season atbats?

But that isn't really the point. I don't think most people are just content to describe or record Arods performance. They are trying to draw, from that performance, some conclusions about some personality trait he has or some weakness or failing he has. That he is a "choker." So, in order to do that, they first have to explain why playoff atbats for NYY count and atbats for SEA don't. And how 9th inning, 2 out situations in September or May or June don't count either. How can one be super-clutch in those situations but a choker overall?

If all anyone wanted to do was just DESCRIBE how Arod has performed, that would be just fine. We can all look up his BA and RBI totals. But some people want to go way further than that.

But what people are doing is not completely arbitrary, in fact in can be measured. In a BP book, IIRC they described a system to measure clutch where you take each AB and weigh it by how much it changed the team's % to win the game.

It was something like this: for instance a first inning leadoff single takes your team from 50% to 51% or whatever. Say a walkoff HR behind by one takes you from 10% to 100%. You get proportionately more credit for the walkoff HR. You get about 90x more credit (or whatever it works out to) for the 9th inning hit.

You can do the same thing for ARod on the Yankees, but you can use how each AB affects % chance of winning the World Series instead of % chance of winning an individual game. ALDS is roughly 1/4 as important as WS but more important than regular season.

This wouldn't be FAIR because of small sample sizes, but it would accurately measure his PERFORMANCE.

More accurately he was incredible his first 23 playoff games (7 with the Yankees), and terrible his last 14 playoff games.
