oh, you didn't answer my ? in regards to the Buffs. In your eyes, do they get support?

[/ QUOTE ]

They have. When the whole rape/harassment/stripper deal came out they lost a lot of support. But Hawkins has a lot of support in getting the program going again.

Again, when the team was doing some crap that wasn't approved of they were shunned. Cody Hawkins is very popular and the team is supported again.

Our sport teams are the most important thing in the town. But we don't accept management thats not committed to the team.. especially when we have such an amazing owner in Pat Bowlen. I'm sorry if you continue to support owners that fleece you, but we have higher expectations here and a number of championships in the last decade.

[/ QUOTE ]

Its funny to see you agreeing with me and making this argument after you saying I wasn't a "real fan" earlier. Seems like two sides to the same coin to me.

[/ QUOTE ]

I was thinking the same thing in regards to agreeing.. but I don't think the issues are mutually exclusive. I want the best for my teams over any personal deal.. and sometimes that means not supporting them if they are screwing me.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah, they aren't exactly the same thing. Basically, I dislike blind homerism based on where you happened to be born, and poor consumerism. I like the Vikings because I was born there, fine, but I'm not going to root for them when they make stupid decisions and are completely inept. If they want my dollars, they are going to have to work for them, just like every other company in America has to work for them. If they don't want my dollars, thats fine, there are probably enough "die hards" to keep any retarded franchise afloat. I'll just take my business elsewhere.

I grew up eating Cheerios but if General Mills changes the recipe and starts making [censored]-flavored Cheerios I'm going to switch to Corn Flakes.

[/ QUOTE ]

I agree with all that. I do pull for these teams because I was raised with them and born here. But, as I clarified, I will turn my back and my wallet if they do stupid crap that I don't support.

good night guys. Congrats to the Rockies. Just talked to my brother who was at the game. He's pretty pumped and is trash talking my Cubs. Hope we get to deliver a beat down to them. Can't wait for Wed.

Also,

CU loses a lot of support because we have a lot of programs around here that are rivals. Wyoming, Colo St, Air Force, etc.

At the very least, fans who continue to support a team, be it monetarily or not, despite that team making it PAINFULLY obvious that they are more interested in making money than in putting out a quality product or satisfying their fans, are TERRIBLE consumers. If this is something they want to brag about (looking at you, Cubs fans) then fine.

[/ QUOTE ]

True, but it doesn't make Denver a good sports town. It isn't.

[/ QUOTE ]

I guess I just have a different definition of what a good sports town is. This is the second time tonight I've come up against people who disagree with me on what a "real fan" is or what a "real sports town" is so it seems pretty likely that it is ME who has some non-standard definitions. I just think blind homerism regardless of the consequences != good sports town. A good sports town is knowledgeable and exerts the only small influence it can to improve its sports teams, and that is the power of financial backing. If I were an owner, and I had a fan base that would sell out the stadium, buy tons of merchandise and go apeshit no matter what kind of garbage I put out there, why would I spend money to win?

[/ QUOTE ]

Because you wanted to win? Part of the reason why sports economics are so [censored] is because profit motive isn't the #1 driving force behind the decisions being made - in some places.

It's been a while since any of my teams (Devils, Giants, Yankees) have been hopeless and dreadful. I've never been a season-ticket holder to any of them and doubt I ever will be. To me, it's okay if the fans stop coming - but Denver will never rate highly as a good sports town to me, you just don't sense the same passion you do in New York or Boston or Philadelphia. Perhaps it's because two of their franchises appeared in town in the 90s - it takes a long time to build up real loyalty. I don't support Chicago-based you're-not-a-fan-until-you-suffer-through-20-heartbreaking-years stuff, but I can't see myself ever significantly switching loyalties, regardless of what happens with management.

And even if there is a lot of fan loyalty, or sellouts, that doesn't guarantee profits to the owners. Lucchino claims that between 96-98 the Padres set attendance records at home (they also went to Mexico and LA to 'recruit' fans). He also claims that they were still losing $15M/year and would have to cut payroll, which would probably hurt their attendance when they started losing more games.

What frustrated Denver fans is while having a bottom third payroll (55 million) they were still top third in profits. If the product is good we'll spend the money.. raise ticket prices 20% and make us competitive.

Do the Rockies have their own television station; i.e. some type of regional sports network?
