Re: Fastest You\'ve Ever Driven
[ QUOTE ]
Got my first Mustang GT (85 model) when I was 18. Hit about 130 in it that first night. Got my second GT when I was 20 (90 model). Hit 140 in it the first night. Scared me a little, quite a rush. Had several souped up Mustangs over the years but they were all geared for acceleration, not top speed, so they usually topped out about 125 or so after modding them. Buddy of mine just got an 08 Vette. Took me for a ride the other night down Interstate and hit 170 he said, I was too busy holding onto the seat and praying. I don't care to go fast like that with someone else at the wheel. [/ QUOTE ] I have an 86 GT that I got when I was 16. I got it as fast as it would go, but I put 3.73 gears in it so my speedo was way off. I'm guessing it topped out around 130. |

Re: Fastest You\'ve Ever Driven

prohornblower: I understand your skepticism. Let's keep in mind that none of the other posters said that the speeds they attained were as high as their car would go. Also there is always a chance I was going downhill or wind-aided. Here is a picture of a Beretta's speedometer: It looks like straight down would have been about 145, so I'll take 140 if you'll give it to me. [/ QUOTE ] You (and many others) falsely assume that the linear relationship maintains when the speedometer pushes past the big numbers. It doesn't, for most cars speed measured via the speedometer above 100 is wildly inaccurate. Note most does not include the many high performance vehicles mentioned here, it does include escorts, berettas, and such. I thought this was well understood. J |

I drove that road at night in the rain - I thought it was a huge beat. During the daytime it would've been easy to do triple digit speeds. |

Re: Fastest You\'ve Ever Driven
In the spring I drove my 1991 Nissan Maxima 107 mph.
I prolly beat that in my new Civic, but it was way cooler in the old car... you really felt it. |

Re: Fastest You\'ve Ever Driven
Between 135 and 140 in a 1992 MB C280 down an old country road (This was probably back in '95-'96). I don't remember the exact speed at the moment, but it was definitely over 135.
Most recent was 118 in a '98 SL500 a few months ago (old country road again). Both times were pretty scary, but worthwhile. Also, the cars didn't seem to be anywhere near their peak... It was just time to slow down. Once you become concerned that glancing at the speedometer to see how fast you're going will affect your driving, it's time to slow down. |

[/ QUOTE ] Yea, it's the best place I've ever seen for high speed driving. It's better than a track because it's perfectly straight and the road surface is amazing. Combine that with how empty and straight it is and you've got the perfect road. |
