Default JJ Hardy, ss from the Brewers

Where did this guy come from? Previous stats don't really support the current run.

He'll cool off at some point, but can this guy really go .320/25/120 for the season?

He was a top prospect for a while after being a second round pick mostly based on defensive ability. Added some muscle this year but I don't know if he can keep up this torrid pace. Never batted over .300 or had more than 12 homers even in minors.

Pretty sure he's either a quick starter or very streaky, I don't have stats to back it up but I remember him from past years in fantasy as a back up SS.

He's a contact hitter, really doesn't strike out much. His rookie year he batted like .180 in the first half and then batted over .300 the second half. He was injured most of last year. Go Brewers!

This is a good synopsis.

While he was in the minors, everyone in the organization knew he'd be the starting SS with the Brewers one day. He's a gold glove caliber fielder. The word on his hitting was that he most definitely had the potential to hit .300 with 25 homers or so.

As the last poster said, he was awful the first half of his rookie year. He really wasn't ready to be the full time starter - he was thrown into the fire because of injuries, while Rickie Weeks and Prince Fielder got to keep learning in the minors. His glove was fantastic from the start, though. Second half, his bad caught up. Last year, he screwed up his ankle early, but was showing signs that he could hit.

I don't really think he's bulked up much this year. He's still a thin guy. He's just seeing the ball really well and seems to be (as odd as it sounds since he's jacking homers left and right) staying within himself at the plate. He's obviously MUCH more relaxed and comfortable this year. It also helps that Hardy has Fielder, Hall, and Estrada hitting behind him.

Will he hit 35 home runs? Probably not. But hit .300 with 25 home runs and 85 RBI's. Sure. It's early, but he's not unlike Robin Yount. Contact hitter with some power, excellent fielder, and has some speed.

He's running hot on balls in play (.339 average likely to regress to .295-.305).

He's running hot on RISP (.364 average likely to regress to mean).

He's hitting the ball more in the air this year (44% ground balls 2005, 47% ground balls 2006, 31% ground balls in 2007). This accounts for his bump up in HR and doubles.

The only thing he's really doing different is getting under more balls. He's not really hitting the ball harder (his line drive % has actually decreased from prior years). Either he has tweaked his swing to loft the ball more, in which case 25-30 HR is pretty likely, or he's just hitting more flyballs on a small sample space. Either is possible - most mature players don't change their GB/FB/LD ratios suddenly but it's possible for a young player.
