Resolution and monitor question

the graphics card in my laptop, dell e1405, has a max display resolution of, 1280 x 800, so does that mean i cant buy a 24inch monitor , hook it up and run it with 1900x1200 resolution. Whats the point of buying another monitor to hook up if it doesnt even run on the higher resolution.

The chip inside is an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 with a max support resolution of 2048x1536 at 75 Hz.

laptop flat panel max resolution != external monitor max resolution
