taking a shot in LA
I'll be moving to LA in a few months for a sabbatical/change of pace which will include a fair bit of poker. (30 hours per week)
I expect to make .5-.9 BB per hour in the 20 game and have 500BB. Should I take a shot at the 40 game right off the bat or wait till I run good in the 20? |

If you have to ask, you should probably start with the 20.

In a new city with a new style of play, you should get your feet wet in the 20, definitely. I have 600 BBs for the 20 game and I still haven't moved up to the 40.

Re: taking a shot in LA
Thanks for the feedback. I hear about how the 40 game plays just the same as the 20 game and get tempted.
I also think about the potential of running good for week and playing the 40 game exclusivly. |

Re: taking a shot in LA
OK, I know this is going to sound lame, but whenever I read someone talk about the "20 game" I don't know if they mean 10-20 or 20-40. It would sure be easier for people not familiar with the games in the area if people would give the full limit, but if it is a standard shorthand I would appreciate it if someone would clarify for me this once and then I won't have ot ask again....

People will give you a lot of scaredy advice about starting out slow, but every time you play at low stakes when you could be playing at higher stakes and winning, you're forfeiting potential income. |

every time you play at low stakes when you could be playing at higher stakes and winning, you're forfeiting potential income. [/ QUOTE ] And if OP plays the 40 and makes 0.4 BB / hr instead of making 1 BB / hr at the 20, then he's forfeiting income as well, while also drastically increasing his variance. Just because you can beat a higher stakes game doesn't necessarily mean you should be playing in it. |
