My PC was overheating so I decided to double check the CPU/Fan ..
My computer has been switching itself off a few times recently. I thought this was due to the CPU overheating so I checked the BIOS which showed the CPU temp at 72oC (this was a few minutes after it had been cool enough to boot again)
The CPU fan needed cleaned so I took it out and took all the fluff/hair/dust/whatever off. The thermal compound looked in bad shape so I figured i'd clean it off and replace it too. Now when I plug everything back in and hit the power switch nothing comes up on the monitor, the PC doesnt sound like it's booting either. I took the fan off again and tried powering up without it but the PC will only stay on for a few seconds before powering off. So... does this sound like a fried CPU or what? CPU was an amd 2600, mboard a7n8x..

It should be running in the 60's, but it's max is 85. It's either fried or you didn't put everything bad together correctly. Does the LED on the motherboard come on?

Yeah the led comes back on. The drives power up on boot, the fans spin, some whirling noises but there isn't the usual post beep.. I pulled the CPU out and it fails at the same point :/

Yup, you're gonna need a new cpu, but there's also a chance the problem is the motherboard. Not sure how to test to find out which one it is. [/ QUOTE ] 9x out of 10 its the BIOS. Flush the CMOS by reseting the battery and jumpers, see if it will boot then. If that doesnt work disconnect all of the drives and try it again. If you still have bad results then its likely the MB, Ram or processor - all three are significant variables.

[/ QUOTE ] Tried this but it didn't work [img]/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img] Ordered a new CPU, should be here by thursday.

[/ QUOTE ] At the minute it won't really do anything, I power it up and it makes some whirling noises for a few seconds before powering off.. the monitor doesn't come out of stand by mode. Just noticed if I push the fan down a bit harder on the CPU then the power will stay on but it still won't boot.
